Sigh…..
That it should come to this. Unfortunately a group I belong to is going to be using Facebook, and given that I’m supposed to be the IT guy, I am expected to know how it works.
So, I’ve registered and am working out how little I need to put up there whilst still making any use of it whatsoever. I have to say that you won’t find much in the line of my social and business calendar up there – I cannot understand for the life of me why people publicise where they’re going to be and when they’re going to be there!
Or am I missing something?
People I know have started increasingly living their lives through bloody Facebook and so as these folks are fairly normal, well balanced individuals I assume that there must be something there that I’m not quite getting. I’m not at all convinced that social networking sites are going to be with us for much longer, and I await to be convinced by my experiences on there.
Having said that, I just encountered this story on the BBC Website, which points to a future in terms of more local social networks. Sort of like sites like Sheffield Forum or any other site of a similar nature that’s been around for 5 or 6 years. There genuinely is nothing new under the sun…
So, poke away – I’m to be found here.
It’s not just you, I don’t really ‘get’ the Facebook thing. I’ve signed up and use it as a way to keep in touch with student clubs I’m involved with but a lot of the time just find it annoying…
…still at least Facebook is usable, unlike it’s cousin MySpace!
Hi there,
I gather from those ‘in the know’ that MySpace is slipping in popularity because of it’s lack of usability. There was an interesting comment made by someone the other day about ‘class distinction’ on Social Networking sites in the US Military – the squaddies use MySpace and the officers use Facebook….
I’ve actually been pleasantly surprised that I’ve been able to find people from my past on there, and my main objective now is to decline all invitations to hugs, becoming a Knight, sheep throwing parties and so on. 🙂
Hi there, my advice re facebook is least said least mended particularly vis-a-vis their profiles which you’re well advised to turn off for everybody but approved friends. Presently facebook has over 8million UK users and is NOT registered as a Data Controller with the UKs Information Commission. It is also incredibly difficult to completely remove personal data from this site.
Reason I’m here though is to check out your server’s terms & conditions of use for hosting 🙂
Hi Andco,
Umm….T&Cs? What dem? 😉
Let me get back to you on that!
As for Facebook – indeed and I’ve set my account to maximum privacy, and am also very picky with the Applications. I’m probably upsetting lots of people who know me by ignoring requests to play games, etc. One thing that would be good would be to have a flag on your profile that basically says ‘I’m not here to play games’. 🙂
